A baggage policy is a set of rules and guidelines about the permitted baggage allowance limit. These allowances are permitted based on the class of the ticket and also the status of the passengers, which will be visible on the ticket or the passenger's receipt. If you are considering traveling with Lufthansa Airlines, then these are some of the rules and guidelines every traveler must follow.

Free baggage dimensions

The free baggage dimension means that one can carry baggage or luggage within the permitted dimensions. As per the guidelines and rules of Lufthansa Airlines, passengers are allowed to carry baggage within the permitted dimensions, which should be 62 inches or 158 cm ( width + height + depth). Baggage and luggage within the permitted weight and dimension are free to carry.

Baggage Allowance

  • Economy Class -  Lufthansa passengers flying in economy class are allowed to carry one bag, which can weigh up to 23 kg.
  • Business Class - Passengers traveling in business class are permitted to carry two pieces of baggage, each weighing up to 32 kg.

Additional Baggage Fees

The maximum allowed weight for all the tickets is 32 kg, and the dimensions must be within the permitted limit, which is 62 inches or 158 cm. If the baggage items exceed the weight, they will not be accepted as travel baggage. However, they can be sent as air cargo with the air cargo rates.

Children under two are permitted to carry two pieces of baggage, which can weigh up to 23kg and can be folded under the pushchair. However, these services can be different based on the nation, and they may include additional charges and fees. So, it is suggested that excess baggage be checked once before getting on the flight.

Special Baggage Rules for Traveling to/from Across the USA

According to the consumer protection law of the United States Department of Transportation, the following baggage rules and policies apply to flights to or from the USA.

  • These baggage rules apply to all journeys to/from or across the USA. They include the free baggage allowance, and every piece of luggage must be within the permitted dimension and weight, or additional charges may be included.
  • These baggage rules and regulations are made by the airlines listed first on the tickets. If Lufthansa is listed on the first flight segment of the ticket, then Lufthansa's baggage regulations will apply to the entire journey.
  • Any airline listed as the first carrier on the ticket is free to transfer the baggage rules. In such cases, the rules of the other airlines will apply to the whole journey.
  • Lufthansa, therefore, cannot guarantee that, for the tickets that Lufthansa issues, the baggage rules will be applied to every case. While the rules of the other airlines may be different from the rules and regulations of Lufhthansa.

Boking and Prices of the Excess Baggage

Passengers will be charged with the additional charges and fees when the baggage excess the permitted dimension and weight. If your baggage crosses the permitted size limit or if it weighs more than the allowed limit, then it will be counted as excess baggage.

Passengers will be allowed to carry an extra piece of baggage by paying the extra charges and fees. If you want to travel with extra luggage, you can contact the airline customer service representative to get all the details and information about the charges related to the excess baggage.

It is suggested to calculate your baggage using the baggage calculator, which is available on the official website of Lufthansa Airlines so that you can get an idea of the dimensions and weight.
